Business Travelers: Worrying About Terrorism May Kill You

The looming shadow of terrorism is pervasive. The recent suicide attack that targeted a music concert in Manchester, UK; the vehicle attack in London, UK, two months prior;  and compounded further by regular images across the media of marauding attacks in cities such as Paris and Berlin. These acts of extreme violence are perpetrated by individuals who embrace death as part of the objective of their actions. The very thought of this is no doubt extremely worrisome, but what are the chances of falling victim to terrorism? The simple answer: very small indeed.  Worrying about terrorism to the neglect of more prevalent threats, however, may actually increase your risk.

Business travelers quite often have irrational or misplaced fears that can lead them to not feel secure, when in fact they are, while conversely some often feel secure when abroad but are actually far from it. A significant number of travelers fear the risk of terrorism and, in doing so, neglect those risks that are statistically far more likely to kill or injure them.

“Security is two different things – it is a feeling and a reality. You can feel secure even if you are not and you can be secure even if you don’t feel it,” says security technologist Bruce Schneier.

Schneier further explains certain biases in risk perception:

Human beings tend to exaggerate spectacular and rare risks and downplay common risks.

  1. The unknown is perceived to be riskier than the familiar.

Why and how do these relate to business travel safety?

  • Bias #1: Human beings tend to exaggerate spectacular, rare risks and downplay common risks.

This has led to many people being overly focused on the risk of terrorism. In turn, business travelers and those responsible for the security of business travelers often neglect those threats that are statistically far more likely to kill or injure, such as road traffic incidents, crime and drowning.

What is most likely to kill you when traveling?

The U.S State Department maintains records of all registered deaths of U.S. citizens abroad. The details identify for the majority what they died of and where. The results may surprise you. See the two charts in the images above for details.

In Figure 2, it is interesting to note the correlation between deaths due to Terorism (Yellow) and that of deaths due to Pedestrian accidents (Orange).

  • Bias #2: The unknown is perceived to be riskier than the familiar.

Security Services Ukraine

Regular travelers to certain city or location may likely become complacent, especially if they have not been directly affected by any of the dangers or hazards that may be present. This is also referred to as “Boiling Frog Syndrome” – named from the phenomenon that a frog if put into boiling water will immediately jump out, but if you place the frog in cold water and slowly heat it up will stay in there and eventually boil to death.  Not an overly joyous image, but one that paints the picture accurately.

This complacency prevalent with certain travelers often leads to their safety and security decreasing whilst the chances of them being a victim to crime, or neglecting risks increasing. If our feelings match security reality – we make better trade offs.  To improve our personal Security Services Ukraine it is important to understand these two key biases.

“If it is in the news don’t worry about it, as by definition news is something that almost never happens,” says Bruce Schneier. The solution, therefore, is to know what the risks are – and obtain “Ground Truth.” This should involve research into your destination. What are the main dangers of the country or cities that you will be visiting?

Crime, natural disasters, health issues and political instability are all important factors to consider. Consider also specific and current issues such as date rape drugs being utilized in a tourist hotspot, or a spate of recent muggings in certain locations. Study the U.S. State Department website, or the equivalent travel advisory guidance of your country of origin.

What is the metal scraping process itself?

Generally, the scrap is a term which is used for various recyclable materials which left from many products that have been consumped. Some of these products are widely used, such as cars or building blocks. It is also important to mention that the term “scrap” is mistakenly identified as a waste, which is far from true. One example that can prove that scrap isn’t waste is statistical fact that United States’ exported scrap worth more than 10 billion dollars (data from year 2007).

Now, when we briefly explained what the scrap is, and when we mentioned the most common mistake regarding the term “scarp”, it is time to talk about the scrap copper prices.

Copper itself is a ductile metal, which has some very important chemical characteristics. Although it is hard to talk about “more” or “less” important chemical characteristics of any element, we will make the exception of this rule and say that electrical conductivity is definitely one of the most important chemical characteristics of copper. Because of this characteristic, copper is widely used in electronic industry (e.g. trunk, generators, boilers, etc.).

When talking about the scrap value, it important to mention that copper and its alloys (bronze, brass) have been recycled for centuries. The reader familiar with the ancient Greek history is probably familiar with the Colossus of Rhodes (which was one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World), that was often mentioned to have been made of copper. In the middle ages, the copper was used for weapons. Today, we are “surrounded” with copper within many of the electronic devices we use daily. So, the importance of the copper is enormous. The copper, as well as many other elements, is not present in nature in unlimited quantities.

This is where the scraping copper comes to its real importance. During the copper scraping, the maximum attention must be dedicated to keep the purity of copper. Since the copper is very often used for super fine enameled wires, it purity is extremely important to ensure that these wires have high conductivity. Since the enamel is very thin, they mustn’t have any surface flaws. For the power cables, the copper has thicker size, so the purity requirements are slightly less strict.

Scrap copper that is linked with some other materials, will take advantage of the contamination.

Let’s say some final words about the product value of the scrap copper. While considering what we said recently about the importance of copper purity, we can come up with some conclusions. If there are no other alloy compositions within the scrap, it is much easier to remelt the product which has high quality. Furthermore, if the scrap consists of some other alloys (meaning its purity isn’t good), there could be problems regarding adjusting the composition within the chosen specification limits.

We would like to conclude this article with a few words about environmental considerations regarding copper. Copper is the essential trace element and as such is necessary for normal life of most living organisms. It is very important then to take care about the recycling of copper whenever possible.

TIPS YOU NEED TO ENSURE PROPER LANDSCAPE MAINTENANCE

So you just finished your final walk-through with your calgary landscaping contractors and (hopefully) are happy with everything they accomplished. You handed them their final cheque, shook hands, they hopped in their truck and are on their way to the next job.

On the other end, you turn around and see your yard, remembered what it was and saw what it became. You couldn’t be happier!

Now, the hard part: maintaining your new yard. From hardscape care to everyday lawn maintenance, every dollar you spent should be worthwhile.

Here are some tips on how to ensure your landscape maintenance is up to par for years to come:

Hardscaping Landscape Maintenance

The hardscaping portion of your landscape was probably your most costly, so it’s imperative you don’t let it get damaged.

calgary landscaping

Paving Stones:

  • Sweep your patio regularly, especially after a party or gathering.
  • Power-wash once a month – you can rent one from Home Depot
  • Ensure regular polymeric sand between joints to keep weeds from growing.
  • Remove any stains that stick with a store-bought solution from any garden center.
  • Remove and relay any paving stones that shift – this is normal especially with Calgary chinook weather.

Concrete:

  • Reseal concrete every second year or so depending on the degree of wear and tear.
  • Power wash regularly to remove debris.
  • Remove any oil, grease or other stains right away before they settle in.
  • Pay attention to expansion joints as water seeps through, and call for a professional to fix it immediately.

Stone Retaining Walls:

  • Pay attention to any settling within the first year.
  • Make sure caps stay glued or re-apply PL to secure caps on the wall.
  • Ensure that the wall isn’t being “pushed out” from water pressure over time and continues to drain properly.
  • Avoid salt or deicers around the retaining walls.

Softscaping

Softscaping is what is going to give your yard a vibrant glow. Green grass, blooming trees and shrubs are where all your colors and textures are going to come from. It’s important that you take care of these crucial elements on a regular basis to ensure optimal landscaping.

Sod:

  • Water, water, water. The first two-three weeks you should water your lawn twice a day- early morning and late evening.
  • Don’t cut new grass for at least three weeks – let it grow into the soil.
  • Some yellow/brownish patches are normal – it’s just the heat, keep watering!
  • If the patch remains, either replace the sod or power rake it and throw a high-quality seed mix in, then wait.

Plant Materials:

  • Give it time to grow.
  • Again, water, water, water – but don’t drown the plant.
  • Prune regularly, remove dead branches.

Groundcover:

  • Spray round-up anytime you see weeds growing.
  • Top up mulch as it starts to decompose.
  • Cut out straggly, loose fabric underneath, and replace it with newer fabric stapled to the existing one.
  • Blow or pick the fruits and cones falling from your trees.

Calgary landscapers should always let their clients know about maintenance protocols for the work that they do. This is the only way to ensure that the yard stays beautiful for more than a season, and all the hard-earned money that was invested can be shown off for years to come!

Modern tooth-shaded filling resins (also known as “composites”, made from an acrylic base with inorganic fillers) are of a high-quality standard. Above all, these composite fillings are the best choice for front teeth (incisors, canines), as well as smaller posterior fillings.

The adhesive bond between acrylic and enamel is achieved through etching and application of primer to the tooth’s surface. In this way, even fragile teeth are strengthened. For almost every tooth shade there is a similarly shaded composite available, almost always allowing perfect aesthetic adaptation of the filling.

The life span of such extensive fillings is therefore limited to around three to six years. This is, of course, dependent on the patient’s oral hygiene. Treatment with ceramic inlays should therefore always be considered as an alternative to composite.

Advantages and disadvantages of composite resin fillings

  • Fairly inexpensive
  • Strengthening of the tooth
  • Good aesthetics
  • Treatment in only one session
  • No long-term stability of larger fillings
  • Occasional bite sensitivity
  • Possibility of discoloration and abrasion
  • Problems with defects reaching deep under the gums

The Importance of Insurance for Driving Schools

The number of vehicles on our roads is growing by the year. Every single day, more and more budding drivers are book driving lessons online with their instructors, eager to be part of the vehicular revolution. However, there is also a down side to all of this; the more cars that we have on our roads, the more accidents will occur…

Anyone who makes their living by teaching others how to drive will be fully aware of the many hazards on our roads. Tailgating, speeding and overtaking on bends are all frighteningly common problems. At the end of the day, it doesn’t matter how gooda driver you are, if you are unlucky enough to meet someone driving their vehicle recklessly, then you may well be involved in a collision. Even driving instructors will need to make car and accident claims if they are in the wrong place at the wrong time!

book driving lessons online

book driving lessons online

And this is why it is so important to have a good standard of protection in place. Many people will simply see insurance as being a legal requirement and a rather expensive necessity; but this is an unhealthy way to think. In the wake of an accident, the quality of your cover really can make all the difference to how quickly you are able to get your life back on track. And if you run your own driving school, then this will be doubly important! For a driving instructor, a car is the singularly most important item to have. And if it is off the road, then your income will immediately grind to a halt.

Of course, anyone will want their vehicle repaired/replaced as quickly as possible after an accident, but if your livelihood depends on it, then it is so much more serious. Some insurance companies will deal with claims far quicker than others and it is well worth looking around. This is where the internet proves to be very useful; not only can we use it to get quotes, but it will also provide us with plenty of information about each insurer!

Many people will make the mistake of trying to find the very cheapest insurance, but this is often a bad idea. There are plenty of companies out there who will offer you cover for a really low price, but at what other cost? Just how comprehensive will your policy be? And how quickly will they deal with any claims? Finding the right insurance isn’t simply about tracking down the lowest quote, there is far more to it all than that.

We all like to find ourselves a bargain whenever we can, but vehicle insurance is very much an exception. So save your ‘penny-pinching’ for other products and concentrate on the quality of your cover instead! Your vehicle is very important to you and keeping it adequately protected is of paramount importance; especially if you are using it to shape the drivers of tomorrow!

Duty of Care for Business Travel – Why Secure Transportation is Critical

Duty of Care for Business Travelers – Why Secure Executive Transportation is a Critical Aspect

The need for employers to meet their duty of care requirements to employees is a complex process to navigate for many organizations. Understanding what measures you can take to manage this level of risk remains a considerable challenge. Incorporating the use of secure executive security transport United States into your travel risk management plans is a prudent move to reduce this risk and keep your people safe. Now, more than ever the need arises as to how best to meet this legal obligation for staff and employees who are traveling overseas on company business. The constituent groups this affects are varied, ranging from executives, accompanying spouses and dependents, students, teachers, volunteer groups, contractors – the list goes on.

Duty of Care – A Definition

security transportation united states

The broadly accepted definition of Duty of Care is: ‘is a legal obligation, which is imposed on an individual requiring adherence to a standard of reasonable care while performing any acts that could foreseeably harm others. It is the first element that must be established to proceed with an action in negligence.’ Moreover there is now a growing recognition both in the courts and with potential plaintiffs that breaches of duty of care occurring abroad can be heard in U.S. courts. The number of cases being presented has increased and employment lawyers are particularly alert to the issue.

Secure Transportation Considerations when Overseas

This sets an additional standard to be met by employers – in that the measures in place to meet the requirement at home may not suffice abroad. In fact, it is almost certain that it won’t. Your senior executives and traveling staff members will likely be most at risk and exposed to hazards when in transit – particularly when traveling by road or awaiting transportation outside of an airport, venue or business premises. If you are not paying attention to the additional safety and security needs for staff on travel abroad then it is highly likely that you may be placing your own organization at risk – both in terms of their physical safety, but also of potential future litigation.

Increasing levels of risk for the Business Traveler

The much publicized case in 2015 of former NGO worker Steve Dennis provides an excellent example. Dennis, a former staff member of the Norwegian Re (NRC) is sued the agency, claiming gross negligence and failure in duty of care after he was kidnapped and shot in Dadaab, Kenya. Dennis was traveling in a convoy through the camp when his car came under attack. The driver was killed, Dennis was shot in the leg and he and three other colleagues were taken captive. Interviewed in 2015, Dennis stated that: “Like everyone going into a risky situation for work, I believe there’s a minimum level of training and procedures required and when it’s not there I believe there should be accountability for it.” This case absolutely highlights the need to have deliberate and sensible measures in place for employees traveling abroad – especially in an environment where there is an increased level of risk. Not only is transportation key, but also training employees – click here to learn about the Explore Secure® online travel safety training.

How Secure Executive Transportation can protect your Company

Employers and HR managers can help protect their staff (and indeed themselves) by reviewing their procedures and policies. Consider the use of pre-travel training packages or courses to prepare their people for the trips. Then, consider what can be done in-country to further reduce risk. As most issues and incidents tend to arise when people are in transit (especially traveling in vehicles on roads) a further consideration must be the use of secure executive transportation – with trained and vetted drivers. In higher risk environments with an increase likelihood of criminal activity, you may wish to use the enhanced services of a close protection officer in conjunction with secure transportation. It will keep you out of the courts – but above all will set conditions for a safer workplace abroad which in turn will allow your staff to focus on your organizational goals.
